AMERICA.
President Lincoln was shot dead on tHe 15th. of April, at half-past, nine o'clock. He was sitting in. a private box in the New York Theatre, with Mrs. %Xincoln, Mrs. Harris and Major Bathbone, when he was shot by "Witkes Booth, who entered behind; The ball entered behind the President's ear. Death was instantaneous. Booth then, leapt on the stage brandishing his knife, and exclaiming, " Bic semper tyrants." He escaped at the back of the theatre, but resisting, was shot dead. An accomplice, Markland Harold,; was captured; , \ Three .hundred conspirators were arrested. Simultaneously another assassin entered Seward*s sick room, tinder prei tence of urgent business, and rushedj on him, stabbing his throat and: face] Hi? soni coming to his father's rescue] was dangerously wounded. The father's , wounds were Wought fataL Gteneral Grant and, his wife were uhejspectedly preVentejd firom accom-i "panying thePresideat to,the theatre.. \ The indignation in America is* universal. ' -- . - *> ■ On the 2nd May, the English Par 4 liament unanimously voted an address' to the Queen, expressing sorrow andi indignation at Lincoln's assassination. Our the 16th May the Queen addressed a letter of sympathy to Mrs.; Lincoln. ' ' Johnstone is President. Johnstone's speech indicated punishment to the leaders of the rebellion and leniency to. the masses.- - * On the 4th May Sir Frederick Bruce presented his credentials a& Washington. Finally assurances were exchanged. He was cordially received in New York. • : General Lee and 22,000 men had surrendered. The Confederate forces continued surrendering. . The war had practically terminated. Davis had escaped.
Mobile was captured. Lee's retreat from Richmond was conducted with consummate aVm 30,000,000 dollars worth of mJS having been destroyed before , ating the city. Yac,fc *
