The Provisional Relief Committee met at the City Council chamber at two o'clock yesterday. The members present; were: Messrs. R. Wilkin, (|. Gordon, secretary; and lus Honor Mr. Justice Gresson, who' presided. The minutes of tbe hut meeting were read and c*o-u__oedL The following- gentlemen

Hilton an?Lf' ' - son ; and the Venerable Archdeacon J__oH. i A letter was read from the Rev. _£ Tori r enclosing the testimonials of Mr. _f •m"* 1 mouth, of Dunedin, who applied for fk" * appointment of secretary to the BenevoW 1 Aid Society, and who was willing to undertaS all the duties of secretary an d coUecto- „ I guaranteed £300 per annum. v ] The Secretary was requested to ackno-kd ■ Mr. Torlesse's letter, and point out that t* - Committee had no power to deal in the ___tt«! The testimonials, which were of a - er - ' order, to be returned to Mr. Torlesse. j A letter from Mr. Smith, proprietor of tfc. Dissolving Views now exhibiting in the Town Hall, was read, offering an exhibition of Z for one night' under certain conditions, forth* benefit of the Society. The Committee d*. oided they had no power to decide ia th* matter, being only appointed to adm_tf_t_! relief. -~wwr. j Seventy-three applications were coandend jby the Committee, and the following g^ were made :—Coals, in twelve cases, wswhiw twenty-eight cwt.; food, in ten cases, aniou-t. ing to £9 10s; blankets, five pairs ; clothuw Sec, in seven cases, amounting to £8 9a. Three cases were too late, and the applica. tions not being sigued by the Chairman of tha district were referred back. The Committee adjourned at half.pagt four to next Friday, the 14th inst., at two o'clock;'
