OTAGO.

THE GOLD FIELDS. We extract from the ** Otago Daily ISmcs" a report from the Dunstan, by Mr. Warden Robinson, under date June 29Notwithstanding some heavy rains this week the rivers continue low. This is to be attributed to the fact that the fell on the mountains at this season sesames the form of snow. To-day (Saturday), however, a warm wind has been blowing from the north, and it is probable that this will melt some of the snow on the ranges, and that the thaw will cause a flood in the stream, but this cannot be expected to last lone. Between Clyde and Cromwell * a few parties are at work on the beaches, and doing well; but there is nothing like the stir that there has been in former years, when the river was down for the winter. On Thursdty, on my way to Cromwell, I visited the works of the Pioneer Company. They had opened out a fresh paddock, about seventy feet by forty feet, with forty feet stripping, the auriferous drift being about twenty feet in thickness. They find the rock rising as they get more into the bank. This wifl secure them a sufficient fall for their duicing. They have at present 126 feet in length of boxes laid. The manager was expecting to be able to wash up to-day, and -anticipated a good result. Application was made to-day for an extended claim • of one acre, for sluicing, on the Dunstan Flat, below Mutton Town. Botcher's Point is now a very busy plsce; about 200 miners, and perhaps - __fcjr other persona, are residing in this locality. The workings are very wet, , and the expense of pumping the paddocks comes very heavy. One paddock is at present costing £64 per week for pumpmgonly. This is calculating the : . iiiborof&ui* men night and day to each of two pumps. Some of the paddocks ; hare, however, yielded well, as much as 80o_tottap_ddock. The following account we take from from the " Otago Daily Times " of Julyl:— The quarterly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce took place yesterday afternoon in the office of the Chamber, Athenaeum Buildings. Mr. E. B. Martin was in the chair, and there were present—Messrs. E. B. Cargill, J. Davie, B. Gillies, Oliver, J. Barr, J. Swan, W. Watson, Battray, Pantlin, Butterworth, and M. Sholl. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The chairman read the rough draft of a document which had been prepared by the committee for transmission to the Attorney-General, in answer to his letter asking suggestions from the Chamber as to the amendment of the present bankruptcy laws. The principal suggestion in the document was that a Commissioner in Bankruptcy should be appointed, from whose decisions there should be the right of appeal to the Judges of the Supreme Court; and that the additional Resident Magistrate, about to be appointed, might also act as such Commissioner. The document embraced a large number of details as to the working of the Bankruptcy Laws. A general conversation ensued, and a number of suggestions were made of provisions which it would be advisable to embody in any new law. It was resolved that the draft should be printed-for private circulation among the members of the Chamber, and it was'understood that it would come up for consideration along with the suggestions of members at the next meeting of the Chamber. A ballot was taken, and the following gentlemen were elected members of the Chamber: —Messrs. H. D. Maddock, James Macassey, and G. "Whittingham. Two motions, of which notices had been given, lapsed, in consequence of the [ movers not being present. The ChamI ber adjourned. THE STJTERINTENDEtfCY. The " Otago Daily Times," July 4, says are informed that the requisition to the hon. Major Richardson, postmaster-general, asking that he will become a candidate for the Superindendency, which he is now holding ex-officio as Speaker of the Provincial Council, is being numerously signed; and that it is intended to forward the document to him at "Wellington, by the N.Z. Co.'s steamer "Wellington, which is advertised to sail to-morrow. "We are also informed that signatures are still being freely affixed to the requisition to Mr. Edward M'Glashan; but we have not heard when it is intended to make the presentation.
