YTTELTON MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

The Council met on Friday evening at the usual hour. The followiug members were present-— Messrs. Hargreavcs (chairman), Wright, Fyfc Mason and Balestieo. *

The miuutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed, the following letters were read:—

A letter from the Eer. J. Buller, stating that the Wesleyan Chapel was built on a level given by the authorities at the time, also that the forming of Dublin street would compel them to build a retaining wall which would cost about £100, and he wished to know if the Council would bear half the expense. The Clerk was directed to write to the Trustees of the Wesleyan Church, and ascertain from whom they obtained the level. The question was deferred until an answer was received.

A letter from the Secretary of Public Works, informing the Council that the Government would direct Mr. Dobson to report on the subject of the water supply for Lyttelton, and request Messrs. Holmes and Co. to afford every facility. Jf the Council could show a tangible plan for raising the water, the Government would guarantee the interest of a loan. The Government could not come to any arrangement with the Council respecting the earth for reclaiming a portion of the harbor, until such time as the sea wall should be completed. The Government would pay an amount of £250 to the Council on account, as soon aa the rents from pasturage were received.

A letter from Messrs. Miles and Co. requesting the Council to bear half the expense of asphalting and guttering the footpath in front of their store on Not* wich quay. The subject was deferred until the Surveyor had reported on the expense, and it wai ascertained whether the Government would pay for that part running over the tunnel.

A letter from Mr. Parsons, complaining of the state of the road in front of his house; the matter wee referred to the Surveyor. • • "•

The Council's solicitor attended, and stated that the Council could not give a lease of a piece of land to the Lyttelton Colonists' Society for a library, except at a rack .rent; if they then built they must do w> entirely on sufferance, and trust to any future Council not to disturb them.

Mr. ITyfe called the attention of the Council to the different sizes of the culverts recently constructed on private property. He referred particularly to one being constructed on Mr. Buchanan's property in London street.

Mr. Hargreaves proposed, and Mr. Fyfe seconded—" " That the resolution of Aprij 8 be reconsidered, and that a rate of one shilling in the pound be levied, payable by instalments of one-third on June 16, onethird on August 15, and the remainder on November 15, and that the usual notices be given." The Surveyor's report was read. It stated that metal was required for streets, and gave the quantities of earth required to form Donald street. Mr. Graham's tender for scavenging was accepted. The Council decided not to open the tenders for lighting the town until next meeting. . ~ Accounts to the amount of £119 10a 9d wen passed and ordered to,be paid.. The Council then adjourned;
