B mat Shtpfiko.—Lyttelton, May 18.

ARRIVED. -&_ Heathcote, May 18. ___rv_D. Gazelle,*. fi-rXKD. Minnie, for the West Coast. Quiver, for the West Coast. Mystery; Eagle; Industry; Cordelia; Hawkhead. The schooner Shamrock, Captain W. H. Hayes, from the Feejee Islands, arrived at Lyttelton yesterday afternoon. She left the Feejees on April 23, bound for Wellington, and experienced strong southwest and north-west gales throughout the passage. When about eight miles to the leeward of Wellington lighthouse, on Tuesday last, encountered a very heavy gale from the north-west, and was compelled to bear down to Canterbury. She brings a large cargo of oranges, lemons and cocoanuts, all of which are in fine condition. -

The 8.8. William Mislrin, after extensive repairs, jweeived on Mr. lebister,s slip at Port Chalmers, is intended to «-3 on Monday for Hokitika. When on the strand at the Bluff, "she received such serious damage that the surveyors, finding she could not be repaired id Sontliland, directed that she should be sold for the underwriters. Her purchasers had her removed to Fort Chalmers, and there she was placed on the only exi&ting slip, repaired, and launched on Thursday last. Her repairs, which were somewhat extensive, consisted of new plates in her bottom, stern and atempost replaced, new rivets throughout, _ew heel plates, and such other repairs as were reqn_nte, with two coats of paint outside, and the in side K-coated with a preparation for protection against rust. The little craft looks quite new again, and her owners intend at once placing her in the Hokitika trade, for which she is admirably suited by her draft of water enabling her to go over the bar Captain Hepburn, already favorably known to the _hmedin public, is again in command of the boat.— Daily Times, May 15.

The colonial gunboat Sandfly, Captain Fox, sailed for Manukau, via Taranaki, on Thursday last, at 7 p_a- with despatches for the Hon. Major Atkinson, _Grnsterfor Colonial Defence. The Sandfly came off the New Zealand Steam Navigation Company's slip on Saturday, the 6th instant, after undergoing a thorough repair. Three plates were pot in her hull; one. on the port aide, and two on the starboard side, and about 1000 rivets, thereby strengthening her framing and hull. Her machinery being in first-class.; order needed no repair. About twelve months since a new boiler was placed in her, and all her maolunery refitted. Her cylinders were bored out, and new; pistons fitted with all the latest improvements, under the superintendence of Mr. William ladder, chief engmeer, who also has had the superintendence of her repairs whilst on the slip at Evan's Bay. The hall has been painted inside and out; her cabins have also been repainted, grained and decorated; ttiyl everything has been done to make her a firstdespatch or gun-boat. The iron work was executed by Mr. Seager, and Mr. Lodder expressed ; himself as highly .. satisfied, both at the manner in which the work was executed, as well as at the; moderate charges. On Wednesday last at noon steam was got up, and the vessel taken to Evan's Bay to adjust her compasses, and also to test her _u_hinery. The machinery worked smoothly, and gave every satisfaction. Mr. Lodder reports that .Bran's B*y is in every respect adapted for the erection of a patent slip that would accommodate ships of about 2000 tons; the gradient being regular, and the bottom affording every facility for putting down a slip at a comparatively trifling expense. He also states that it is the best place he has yet seen in the. provinces for the erection of a patent slip. It is absolutely necessary, however, that a road should be constructed from the town to the slip, or that the workmen should reside on the spot. At present they have to walk over a bill some 600 feet high, and the time occupied in going to and fro is something con_derahle. A road could easily be made round the beach, and this would greatly facilitate fhe expedition of the work carried on at-the slip.— Wellington Independent, May 13.
