GENTLEMEN,— The resignation of Mr. Ross having caused a vacancy in the representation of yonr district in the Provincial Councfl, I beg to offer myself as a candidate. My long residence in Canterbury, and the relations which I have had for a considerable period with public affairs, lead mc to hope that I may worthily represent you in the Provincial Legislature. I may say that such abilities as I possess shall, if you elect mc, be devoted to the duties attaching to the post in which I now ask you to place mc, and that I am prepared to work zealously and unremittingly for the present and future welfare of Canterbury ; I should also, at all times, be ready to give my best attention to the especial claims of your district, with which circumstances have afforded mc opportunities of becoming well acquainted.
