SYDNEY.

I of Melbourne we nave news from Sydney to the 4th inst. The Herald of that date cays :— The amount of gold ooin issued by the Sydney j toanch of the Boyal Mint daring the week ended ! March 2 has been 233000 sovereigns. The quantity of gold dost imported into the came establishment I daring the week for the purpose of coinage has been ! 75050z. In general business there has been a fair aniounfc transacted, but prices, with a few exceptions, show no material alteration. Flour—The market is firmer. Holders of first brands of superfine silkdressed Adelaide are now obtaining an advance of 10s j per ton on last week's quotations, sales having been j made at £24 per ton. Other brands rule £l to £2 per ton lower. Chilian is firmer, and is quoted at I £20 per ton. The millers , quotations, however, reI main the same, viz.—£23 for fine flour, and £21 for j seconds. The cause of this improvement is entirely owing to advices from South Australia and Melbourne, of prices in those colonies being very firm, and is not induced by any speculation on this side, purchases being only made in small quantities to meet present requirements. Wheat is also firmer, and Ade- : laide is quoted at 9s 9d to 10s per bushel. Liquids— Ale, in bulk, is rather firmer, some large parcels, of Marrian's having been placed at £7 10s. Porter, in bulk, is scarce, and worth £6 10a to £6 15s. Bottled ale and porter are in rather better request; first brands range from 8s 6d to 10s 6d. In spirits there ie no alteration—brandy, 8s to 8s 3d ; rum, 30 op, 3s 4d to Sβ 5d ; 10s to 10a 6d. Wines.—A large quantity of damaged sherries was cold this week at auction, but prices were no test of the market. Cosens's sherries were also offered, but as buyers would not bid, scarcely any quantity was sold. Teas are inclined to rule easier, owing to late arrivals. Congous range from £5 10s to £9 per chest. Sugars are also depressed, three cargoes having come to hand within the last two days. At auction, to-day, damaged sugars brought very high rates, whereas for sound sugars there was no disposition to purchase. Prices are nominally the same as last week. Coffee is 'without any alteration, and no sales of any magnitude have been made this week. Bice.—ln consequence of the telegrams received from Melbourne, holders are asking advanced prices for new Fatna rice. At auction, to-day, 200 tons were offered, and withdrawn for £22 per ton. The highest bid, however, was only £20 per ton. In the present state of the market quotations are difficult to give. Tobacco and Cigars. — The week has been prolific in imports—the Isabella having arrived from the States with over 100,0001b tobacco; and a simultaneous arrival and quantity in Melbourne per Ocean Eagle. In this state of the market we have but few sales to report, bnt any amount of inquiries for small parcels of first class brands, showing a desire to purchase when qualities are known, and a more definite state of the market is exhibited. Most of the outside lots of tobacco have been absorbed by auction, and for the better samples of tobacco an advance must soon occur. In cigars we have some importations from Manilla, and speculation is talked of in the article. All spurious imports and manufacture have seen their beat days, and should the consignees of manillae hold out dealers must have them. Tallow.—The market was pretty firm, and almost all the lots offered found buyers at full rates. 174 casks were submitted at auction, of which 147 were sold, at from £28 to £3115s for beef; mutton, £32 12s 6dto£33; station, £2615s to £2712s 6d per ton. Hides were steady. The highest price given at auction to-day for heavy hides was 14s each. About 1,450 hides ware offered, and l>3oo sold, at from 5s to 14b each.
