CALCUTTA SWEEP.

Tlie drawing for the Calcutta sweep for tbe Champion came off last night at Birdsey's Hotel, the number of tickets taken was 274, bat a good many were raffled for before the drawing com™—iced. The •whole of the stakes thos amounted to £548. The -winners of the hones were as follows *— Shillelagh, Mr. Parker Otto, Mr. Dehunaine Opera, Mr. Delamaine Bungatribee, Mr. F. H. Brittan Zohrab, Messrs. Binlsey and Hall Ladybird, Mr. Monday Stormbtrd, Mr. G. Goldney Viscount, Mr. Evans Ellesmere, Mr. G. Brittan, junr. Miss Lee, Messrs. Brind and Robertson. As soon as the drawing was over Mr. Barnard offered the chance* of the several horses for sale by public s-ac-on. The competition was spirited, though the prices realised did not exactly follow the betting, so far as it had been ascertained in the course of the afternoon.- for instance, Otto, who has gone very well at her trials since she was landed, may have been j Sooted at 2to 1, and Ladybird at 3to 1; bat the iTorite sold for £175, and Ladybird for £170, and Tiscount, of whom considerable expectation has been formed in the bit few days, and who teemed to c_ —c at strong following by the way in which, the bidding ran op at first, fetched only £105. The biddings firallv stood as follows:— -"hfflelagh, bought by Mr. G. Parker, £33 * Otto, „ Mr. Caverhill, £175 i Opera, _ Mr. Delamaine, £65 Bnogarribee, „ Mr. Nathan, £9 Zohrab, „ Mr. Birdsey, £8 I__y Bird, _ Mr. Col-man, JBI7O Storm Bird, - Mr. Creyke, £34' Tiscount, „ Messrs. Cole AHarding, £105 Ellesmere, „ Mr. Davis, £35 Miss Lee, „ Mr. Coleman, £55 The wholes_m realised by the auction thusamonnted to £689. Five per cent, of this amount is taken for the expenses of the auction, reducing the amount to £635. Of this, half is to be paid to tbe drawers of the aevenl horses, leaving about £317 to be added to the stakes, which th_sa—iounttoaboatJ-865. Four-fifths of this amount, or about £692, wfll be the prize for the holderofthe wininghorse, and one-fifth, or about£l73, for the holder of tbe second horse. The terms of the salewere very dist nctly explained by Mr. Barnard, and the whole affair passed off with entire good humour and sat_rfac_on to all engaged. The sale was Tery well attended. The cards were placed in two kegs, and were drawn by two lads. Capt. Anderson, Mr. H. Lane, and Major White superintended the drawing, and scrutineers were appointed to check the numbers as drawn. It appears that the whole prise to be won, £865, might have been obtained for £689 bad it occurred to any enterprising speculator to buy up all the field. Even allowing for an advanced price which a further bidding might have occasioned, a lair profit of about £100 might have been realised by the transaction. Xv
