Pp-country business being, as generally is the case | inihe holiday season, very slack. We regret having to»nnounce the suspension of Messrs. Cleve and Co. offthis city, who it is understood have been compelled to a make a stoppage in consequence of the relent failure of their connexions in Victoria and Britain. A meeting has been called by circular for Tuesday ; the liabilities are reported to be to a con siaerable extent out of the colony. IMr. IX Girdwood of this city, and Messrs. Gibb aid Co. of Hamilton, have placed Jtheir respective etfotes in trust. iThe demand for flour through the week, though not large, has been steady, and prices have been well abstained The stock of Chilian upon which we have ifainly ihnd to rely of late is now much diminished, ilnall parcels of Chilian, via Australian ports, and Tasmanian, are arriving; but the supply of good Adelaide ia very scanty. Values being £27 for Bart's and first-class Adelaide, £23 and £2-1 for fasmanian and country brands, £20 £21 for Chilian; fliese quotations are for medium parcels, no large operations having taken place. I The sugar market is looking well, although there is lot much doing except for current wants. Teas hare been operated in to some extent, prin:ipally for good and very fine sorts; last week's rates have" been fully sustained. In spirits and wines transactions have been limited to second houses, upon whom considerable demand is made at this season of the year. Importers have not been favored with any improvement in these articles. , Provisions have gone off tolerably well for new (shipments, except in the article of Irish butter, which continues as last noticed —almost unsaleable. I Bottled beers have continued in active request, and bulk beers have exhibited a slight amendment. The Bobert Henderson, from Glasgow, with g—uml made the oxuy important addition to ow*KMiijf|
