OTAGO.
By the Geelong we have news from Otago up to the 23rd instant. A correspondent to the Daily Times in writing from Quecnstown says : — There is a report in circulation of a new goldfield being liiscovered about 60 miles north-west from here, and that the parties have proceeded to Dunedin to make terms with the Government. Every one has heard of the report, but no one knows how it arose. On reference to the maps it will be seen that the locality thus described by distance and direction from the lake must be near the head of the Awarau river according to Native information, and not far from the source of the river falling into Martin Bay, from whence Dr. Hector entered ou hie exploration ot the West j Coast. J AM* ENGLAND KLEVKX. The Daily Times of the 23jrd instant says :— We are glad to report that the necessary preliminary arrangements for the great All England Cricket Match in Dunedin, are progressing rapidly. On Friday, a tender for fencing in the groundi with about 600 yards of close paling, nearly 7ft. high, was accepted ; and ou Saturday the offer of Messrs. Somner and Gunn, for erecting the Grand Stand (375 ft. long) was approved of, and the contract signed on both sides according to the specifications of tho architect, Mr. Mason. From the information given us,.we learn that the cost of the erection and fencing is much beyond that calculated upon by Mr. Jones. This fact, however, should be borne in mind by our citizens, when asked to bear their part in the promised, and needed, subsidy. And wo call alike upon those who have not subscribed, to strain every point in making up the sum originally named as the contribution of Otago. The amount lodged to the credit of the treasurers, in the Bank of New Zealand, is as yet a bare third of tliat so bilked of, while the unavoidable expenses artfound to be in an ascending ratio.
