SrPRKMK COI'RT. ■J-cflre his Honor Mr. Justice Gbessox.j IN CUAMDEBS. The C\>;:rt rouit.ien. Ed it* fitting for hearing tho vttion* under the '" Debtors and I're-.i'tors Act.' I'here are nineteen «i«es, tl-rce of which related to the insolven-y of Lumiey and Martin. hi the case of I.umley and Msrun Mr. ■"liter appeared 'or lite insolvents Mr. iravc - * Itfr tiie creditors ; Lnmloy was brought up in custody of an otlieer from Otago. The cases generally presented no features of public interest. In the case of Lmnley and .Martin the further hearing was adjourned till Thursday next. Tho oiiiccr wished to know if his Honor could grant au order fur Ltimley to be placed in some safe, place of custody in the interval. Jlis Honor decided that he could not interfere in tiie matter, nnd tha safe custody of the prisoner was at the oflicer'a own peril. The case of Henry Jones wa* ordered to stand over till Thursday, to appoint trustees for the management of certain leasehold and other properties of which the petitioner was possessed. Orders were granted in the following cases : An Irew Kigg, John J. Bennetts, \Vuha:u T. Stephens. In the case of Alfred Fisher, lite storekeeper in the Heathcote Valley : Mr. Sl.iter for tho petitioner stated that the, petition was filed at the end of last year: that, at that time. Fisher finding himself in dilHeulties, had assigned tho whole of his property for the benefit of his creditors ; that he had been imprisoned for many months; and that altogether the case before t!.e Court was one of unavoidable nii-firtune. At the meeting of the creditors, Mr. Kerr was appointed to collect the debts ; but as Mr. Kerr had recently died, the amount, if any, that h.nl been collected, could not be ascertained except • upon application to the executors. After st'ine observation.* from his Honor to the efleet that it was quite clear there was in fact no estate, Mr. Miter s::id that the whott* matter might be regarded as a legal fiction ; but ho would urge upon the court, lhat, under the cir-cumstance.-i lie had stated, the petitioner might bo entitled to his discharge. Uis Honor ordered tho insolvent to be rcle:ised from further custody. The order for the arrest of Captain Christie of the ship now in Lyttleton Harbor, was refus d. The circumstances, brietlv, were as fullows : —A passenger, Mr. P Oyly. had given notice of action for dnnug-.-s, £lOOD, for " :iss;uilt anil «-ant of aceoniino.lation " during the voyage. The order was refused as the dilJorent grounds ("or claim.ng damages were r.ol speciiied, and as ll'.e Ca[>taiu «as r.ut cognisant of the assault. The folli>wing cases not ha\iug come on for hearing further protection was granted:—John Manning, Ilenrv .Jnjuers, Thomas Atkinson, liotel-keeper; James lloaio, butcher; William Merrit, carter; George Alexander, D.iniel Mnn-ni-.ig. William Sloan.-, George HaLup, Babies and Manning. PAKOUAMA OF TUX AMKRICAX WAR. Mr. Manly, who has been exhibit ng his panorama in the neighbouring province, will commence this evening at the Music Hall. As this will be the first exhibition of tho kind in Cbristchureh. it will doubtless excite sonic little interest. The character of the entertainment and tho amount of success which has attended it in Otng'>, may be gathered fro::i the following notice in Iho Observer: — Everything at the present moment bearing on the troubled state of America occupies a prominent place in the social and domestic circle. We wero invited on the evening of Thursdny to ntteud a, private exhibition of the above panorama, and we must cordially testify to the labour, skill, and artistic ability of Mr. Manly. On many occasions in the horac country we have visited exhibitions of panoramas, but on na osciision did it affbrd us moru gratification than on witnessing the stirring scenes so ably depicted by this abla artist. Wo would recommend all who wish to see things n3 they Inive been in America for tiie last two years to pay an early visit to Munly's Panorama.
