CHURCH MEETING.
In our report of the Church meeting yesterday, the Bishop of Christchurch is made to say that "he thought the imposition of pew rents the most honest principle that could he adopted." Hie Lordship said " the lowest principle." The error occurred by a wrong reading of tho reporter's notes. Mr. Torlessc has sent us the following letter on the same subject:— TO THE EDITOR OF TIIE 'tRESS.' Sir, —In perusing the report of the Church meeting last night in your issue of to-day, I was surprised to find that I am reported oa having proposed a course diametrically opposite to the appropriation of tho sittings and the payment for sittings, as the only certain means of providing for the etipend of the clergy. 1 beg to state that I proposed the above alteration, and I believe was supported by a Tcry Large majority of the meeting; but considered that it was desirable to obtain the opinion of a full meeting of the parishioners. The rest of tho report was similarly faulty. In conclusion, allow mc to state that it would be preferable that no report of a meeting whatever should be put forth, than that such a misrepresentation as this should occur. I am &c, CITABLES O. XoaLESSE. Cliristchun.li, Sept. 3, 1863. We regret that Mr. Torlesse should hare been misrepresented, and are much obliged to him for his advice on the subject of reporting generally.
