LYTTELTON.
LYTTELTON HIGH SCHOOL: The distribution of prizes took phtco tlio 19th instant, in tho presence of a large number of ladies and gentlemen interested in the education of tho younger branches of the community. Tho larger examination took place on tho 10th instant, and was conducted by Mr. ltcstell the Government Inspector, Mr. Ferguson, head master, and Mr. Dempster, second master. On tlie present occasion only tho higher classes were examined by Mr. Ferguson and Dr. Donald iv practical and mental arithmetic, geometry, and geography ; tho latter :science was ably gone through by tlio pupils ; tlie subject was "North and South America." Tlio answers were correctly given aud gavo much satistiu*tion to tho visitors present. The prizes consisted of about 30 valuablo books handsomely bound, cuses of mathematical instrument', and boxes of colors, some of which wore presented by the gentlemen who tako groat interest in the success of tho school. Upon enquiry wo find that tho number on tlie roll comprises 138 for tho year, and about 100 for present quart or. We beg to apologize for the omission of the list of prizes which had been kindly forwarded, but was unavoidably crowded out by the arrival of English news.
