One Research Scholarship For Advanced Study
The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research this year for the first time initiated the idea of awarding one National Research Scholarship to be available for graduates of United Kingdom University Colleges, and this will enable them to come to New Zealand to undertake advanced courses of study in the Dominion. Hitherto and at present a number of: scholarships have been available to take students from New Zealand to study at overseas seats of learning. The Council, however, recognises that there now exist, in New Zealand University Colleges and Departmental institutions, opportunities for advanced studies, where those from the United Kingdom and other parts of the Commonwealth can with profit spend some time. A single National Research Scholarship, which has a value of £350 per annum, together with an allowance for college fees, books, and apparatus of £IOO and travelling allowance of £IOO, -is intended to initiate this change of direction in awards, and will be given a thorough trial. Recently the first award has been made to Mr T. Hatherton, who holds a B.Sc. degree in physics and mathematics from the University of London, and has had a year’s post-graduate study in geophysics. He proposes to study geophysics (gravitation methods), and to work with Dr E. I. Robertson, geophysical section of the Geological Survey, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. He is at present en route to New Zealand.
