THE HARBOUR AGAIN Sir, —Mr C. R. J. Relf, Manawahe, in his letter re harbour location, makes comparison of the respective debts, Tauranga £21,000 as against Whakatane £63,666. He does not balance his comparison by giving the annual tonnage of the two ports, nor does he work out the debt per ton. We also know that the Tauranga port has up to the present had little work whereas V/hakatane’s present port is the result of expensive rock demolition, etc. while increasing her shipping.
Because a farm or a business carries a mortage, it does not necessarily indicate that it is not a busi-' ness-like and paying proposition, rather the reverse is often indicated, that the concern is undertaking development and expansion. Without any timber to boost the tonnage, Whakatane has already proved its claim to be the produce port for the Bay. Present debt has little to do with the question under consideration.
