MATATUA SEXCENTENARY CELEBRATIONS * • and UNVEILING OF WAR MEMORIAL AT WHAKATANE ON September 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 1950 The New Zealand Government will be represented by the Honourable Mr Corbett, M.P., Minister in Charge of Native Affairs, the Honourable Mr Sullivan, M.P., Member for this Electorate. The Opposition will be represented by The Right Honourable Mr Fraser, M.P., P.C. On Friday night, September 22 (this week) in the Winter Show Buildings at 8.15 p.m. a unique and never-to-be-forgotten MAORI CONCERT will be given. Maori talent from all over the North Island will provide the programme. Admittance: Adults 3/-, Children 1/-. Dance to follow. Admission 2/6. A Haka Party will parade the main street one hour before the Concert. On Saturday, September 23 at 10.30 a.m. the ceremonies will begin on the Marae. An ancient canoe 40 feet long will come from the sea, and will meet the official party opposite the War Memorial. It will in some small degree give onlookers an idea of the privations and risks taken by those on the original Matatua Canoe. At 6.30 p.m. Returned Soldiers, both Maori and Pakeha, will have a reunion dinner on the Marae. Admission 10/-. Basketball, Hockey and Football on the Domain grounds from 1 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
