Murupara Appeal Upheld By Union

A protest from the Murupara Club concerning the action of the Edgecumbe Club in playing a Te Teko player was investigated by the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union. Mr Thompson stated that the club had played for the Pile Cup, the player in question (Anderson) but stated that he, as club president, had done so with the consent of the Murupara team prior to the match. The Edgecumbe team would otherwise have had to play one man short. He was also emphatic in saying that no other outside player had played for Edgecumbe, which was in reference to a suggestion in the letter of appeal that more than one had been on the field that day. Mr Stunll said that his Union disclaimed any connection with the appeal as it was felt that an appeal after prior consent had been obtained was not in the best interests of the game. At the same time the Galatea union was duty bound to hand the appeal on to the Bay. General opinion of the Bay Executive was to the effect that players had no right to alter the set rules for trophies and on the motion of Messrs Abbot and Irvine il was decided to award the match to Murupara.
