New Members Elected By Otakiri Women’s Institute
Three new members, Mrs A. Foote, Mrs T. E. Gardner and Mrs Thompson, were welcomed at the monthly meeting oi,f the Otakiri Women’s Institute, by Mrs Carr, who presided over an excellent attendance.
Visitors also welcomed were Mrs Maxwell, Frankton, Mrs Gillibrand, Mrs Lynn and Mrs Guy Turnbull, England. Birthday invitations were received and accepted from Whakatane and Matata W.I. to celebrate the occasion of their twenty-first birthday.
Two delegates were appointed, Mrs Winters and Mrs Lockyer, to attend a meeting of the A. and P. Society in Whakatane. Mrs Peck and Mrs Wakefield were appointed delegates to attend the bi-annual Council meeting of W.I. to be held at Taneatua in October. It was decided to have a special class for flowering shrubs each month to be entered in the points prize, at the conclusion of the year. A former president of Otakiri, Mrs Guy Turnbull, of England, who is visiting New Zealand, gave a short talk, relating many incidents of her travels abroad, and her meeting with members of the Royal Family. Mrs Turnbull also mentioned how food parcels to Britain are still very much in need.
A talk was given by Mrs Ryde, of Whakatane, on the culture of gladioli. The singing group entertained with two songs. Competitions were won by Mrs Whalley and Mrs Maxwell.
The October meeting will be held in the form of a garden party at the residence of Mrs K. Armstrong. Competition winners were:—
Vegetable, Mrs Peck 1, Mrs Murray 2, Mrs Butler 3; single flower, Mrs Winters 1, Mrs Steenson 2, Mrs Peck 3; double flower, Mrs Butler 1, Mrs W. Mayo 2, Mrs Peck 3; 3head of stock, Mrs Peck 1, Mrs Carr 2, Mrs Butler 3; preserved fruit, Mrs Peck 1, Mrs Butler 2; gardening apron, made from sugar bag, Mrs Peck 1, Mrs Wakefield 2, Mrs Mayo 3.
