Record Maize Season At Gisborne

A good half of the season’s maize crop now has been shelled at Gisborne and it is estimated by the fields division instructor to the Department of Agriculture, Mr H. deO. Chamberlain, that the district’s average yield will approximate 100 bushels, the highest average to date. The crop was the outcome of an excellent growing season. An indication of improved yields this season comes from the Government seed block at Manutuke. The double hybrid seed area of 25 acres this season averaged out at 137 bushels, compared with an estimated 100 bushels last year. Because of increasing demand for the Gisborne-produced seed and to create a surplus guard against any future shortage arising out of an adverse season, it is expected that the seed-producing block this planting season will be extended to one of 40 acres.
