MATATUA SEXCENTENARY CELEBRATIONS and UNVEILING OF WAR MEMORIAL AT WHAKATANE ON September 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 1950 Commemorating the arrival of Matatua Canoe 1350. * A celebration of historic importance not only to this coast but to New Zealand. To this untrodden land came a small band of' men and women who when they ventured forth in their frail vessel, did not know whether death or Survival would be their lot. Their descendants celebrate 600 years of war and peace, 600 years of hard times and years of plenty. PROGRAMME Thursday, 21st—Arrival of Local Tribes. Evening, 8 p.m.—Social and Dance Winter Show Buildings. Friday, 22nd —Arrival of Visiting Tribes. Evening, 8.15 p.m.—Winter Show Buildings, Maori Concert by outstanding performers from local and visiting tribes. Dance to follow. 8.30 p.m. Elders’ conference, recounting history of canoe. Especially the Matatua Canoe.
