RUGBY, HOCKEY & BASKETBALL HAVE IMPORTANT GAMES
Hockey, Rugby and basketball will provide the main sporting attractions' in the Whakatane and Rangitaiki districts over the weekend. For hockey and basketball enthusiasts it will be important as week-end games will be the last for the season and all competitions are expected to be completed by Monday. Whakatane basketball will draw to a close tomorrow afternoon with the annual knockout tournament. The Central Bay of Plenty men’s hockey team is to play Tauranga at Edgecumbe tomorrow while games with a Tauranga Club have been arranged by Edgecumbe for the morning and afternoon. The main hockey day will be at Edgecumbe on Sunday with the final tournament of the year. An important fixture is the West v East umpires game.
The Rugby programme for tomorrow is particularly attractive. At Whakatane there will be four games, two representative matches, an important junior club game and a third grade trial. Central Hawke’s Bay Sub-Union and Opotiki B will be the visiting teams. Rugby will be played at Matata and Edgecumbe for the Rangitaiki Union when both senior and junior fixtures for the Duff and Lion Cups will be finalised. Fixtures at both Whakatane and Te Teko Golf Clubs have been arranged for the week-end and on Sunday a Whakatane team travels to Rotorua for a. friendly match.
