Manners Maketh Man
An unexpected reply was given when counsel was cross-examining a 10 year old boy in the Supreme Court at Dunedin. Seeking to establish that there had been some parental preparation of the boy’s evidence, counsel asked the youngster whether his father had told him anything to say in court. “Yes,” replied the boy. “Dad told me to say ‘Yes, sir,’ and ‘No sir’.” “But did he not tell you other things?” persisted counsel. “Yes, sir,” said the boy. “He told me I wasn’t to say ‘Um’ or to stand with my hands in my pockets.” “He was giving him a lesson in deportment.” commented the Chief Justice, Sir Humphrey O’Leary, joining in the general laughter.
