Experiments With Queen Bees
An association of breeders of queen bees has been formed to provide suitable stock on which to base a project that has been started at Wallaceville Research Station for inbreeding selected queens, then crossing the inbred strains to produce hybrids, and finally testing the hybrids and their progeny under practical conditions, states the annual report of the Department of Agriculture. Inbreeding of queens reached the second generation last season and will be completed for large numbers of queens next season, when hybridisation will begin. Five years must elapse before "the project reaches a stage at which queen bees can be supplied to the beekeeping industry.
