Use Of Insecticides Causes Outbreaks Of Red Mite

Discoveries of science in the field of insecticides are not always an unmixed blessing'. For example, the annual report of the Department of Agriculture says that, with the increasing use of new insecticides toxic to some pests and to the natural enemies of others, control of red mite was again a major problem in Auckland pip-fruit orchards during the past year. A severe outbreak of red mite in Kerikeri citrus orchards is blamed on the application of D.D.T. sprays for the control of dicky rice weevil, the sprays reducing the number of insects that prey on red mite. The Division now recommends that only the lower foliage of trees be sprayed with D.D.T. for the control of dicky rice weevil.
