WHAKATANE A AND B TEAMS CHOSEN A strong team has been chosen to represent Whakatane against the touring Central Hawke’s Bay Rugby team at Whakatane on Saturday. This will be the main game of the day. HAKATANE JUNIORS WIN SHALFOON SHIELD (Special from “Arrissimo”) OPOTIKI, Sunday. Superior in every department Whakatane defeated Opotiki by 17 points to 11 to take the Shalfoon Shield from the holders in a junior representative Rugby match yesterday. Because of injuries to two of their players Opotiki werg unable to field their full selected team but despite this Whakatane entirely deserved their win. The referee, Mr G. Lewis, was inclined to use his whistle too often and this was inclined to slow up the game somewhat. Half way through the second spell when Opotiki took the lead by 8 to 6, it looked as if it would be an interesting climax, but Whakatane came to light and dominated the play to eyentually win by six clear points. The centre kick was returned for Whakatane to attack and their backs in a good movement saw winger M. Brown score fairly wide out. Hunia failed to convert. The kick off saw Opotiki rally to work play to the visitors’ 25 and from a scrummage Boynton carried on to open Opotiki’s score. H. Parkinson failed to convert Whakatane 6, Opotiki 3. Half time. By good play H. Parkinson broke away and inpassed to score under the posts. Boynton converted to bring the score Opotiki 8, Whakatane 6.

From the centre Whakatane made ground and from a scrum Simpson, who was playing good football, worked the blind side and beating a man transferred,.* to Brown to score. Whakatane 9, Opotiki 8.

PAROA WINS SENIOR COMPETITION

By defeating Opotiki on Saturday Whakatane juniors took the Shalfoon Shield to bring the second Rugby trophy back to the Whakatane Rugby Union this season. Whakatane senior B are at present holding the Moore Shield.

By winning by default from Ruatoki on Saturday Paroa have now won the senior competition for the Waitemata Cup. In their defeat of United the bright Wairaka side assured themselves of second place Poroporo third. The third grade competition was decided after High School A beat Ruatoki.
