Waimana’s Savings During the last week £5166 was invested in the Gisborne national savings district. Of this figure £202 was invested at the Waimana Post Office.
New Slipway A new slipway is to be constructed by the Whakatane Harbour Board adjacent to the main Whakatane wharf. Steel rails and sleepers have been obtained for the job, which is expected to be completed within the next two months.
Playground Erosion
Erosion of the chilcfren’s play- , ground opposite the Bank of New Zealand is being done slowly by the Wairere Stream, it was stated to the bi-monthly meeting of the Whakatane Harbour Board. The matter has been referred to the Whakatane Borough Council which is lessee of the area.
Rehabilitation Loans Rehabilitation loans worth £77,152581 had been authorised for 94,503 ex-servicemen and women by the end of June. In June itself 1353 loans were. authorised valued at £1,439,099. Loans have been for farms, businesses, houses, furniture, tools,of trade and other miscellaneous purposes.
Red Cross Cards
The change for the worse ✓ in the weather undoubtedly kept some of the intending euchre players at home on Thursday evening, but a number of staunch supporters of Red Cross attended the Edgecumbe Red Cross card evening. Several tables of keen players obviously enjoyed their games.
National Athletic Events • The senior national athletic championships for 1950-51 will be held in Wellington. The management committee of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association has approved the dates March 2 and 3 for the meeting. The women’s and junior championships will be held in Hawke’s Bay on February 23 and 24.
Heads Quarry Spoil Spoil for reclamation is to be taken from the Muriwai Point quarry at the Heads. This was decided by the Whakatane Harbour Board on Friday but a Maori section adjoining the quarry is not to be disturbed. The Board has applied to take the section under the Public Works Act but this has not yet been approved. More Sections If reclamation is proceeded with about 30 sections could be made available on the Strand* extension area. This was revealed by the chairman of the Whakatane Harbour Board on Friday. Reclamation for 15 sections is to be carried out as soon as .drainage problems with the Whakatane Borough Council are completed. Work is to be let by tender. Hot Weather Those who growl, about football weather in New Zealand should consider just how they might like the other extremes. Recently a rugby - league test was played between Papua and New Guinea, the former winning 6-2. Players joined in with rare zest but spectators,' among, them many new arrivals, were rather languid. A check up showed that the match was played in a temperature of 98 degrees.
