MORE CRITICISM

Sir, —I wish to endorse the remarks of your correspondents “Good Show” and “A Visitor” concerning the Whakatane Repertory Society’s production of “You Can’t Take It With You.” I happened to be in the district when the second performance was given, and a friend and I, both members of another young society, the Te Aroha Amateur Dramatic Society, were delighted to see the play. After being told that it was the first major venture of the Society and remembering the “teething troubles” of our own organisation, We naturally did not expect anything polished. To say that we were surprised at the high standard of the production, however, would be an undei’statement. It was a grand effort. The coverage given in the Beacon following the play was disappointing. It gave one the impression that a reporter had called on the producer after the performance with the result that the outstanding success of the play was not appreciated by your reporter. Both those connected with the presentation, and the general public which turned up in such numbers, and made up two very attentive audiences, are deserving of high commendation. The work which the Society is doing will mdan a great deal to Whakatane and the country districts, and it is to be hoped that the interest of the public will be maintained So that the Society can continue to provide' entertainment and education of such a standard. B. W. GORDON.
