Overprinted Stamp Will Be Used To Meet Emergency
A provisional postage stamp, overprinted “lid Postage,” will be soon on sale. The recent increase from Id to l|d as the minimum postage rate for invoices, accounts and receipts has meant a sharp rise in the sale of lid stamps, and it is to meet this need that the overprinted stamp is to be issued. According to the Postmaster-Gen-eral, Mr Broadfoot, fresh supplies of the current lid stamp are on order from England but will not arrive in-New Zealand for some time. The provisional stamp will be printed from the blank duty plate used for printing stamps commonly known as the “arms” series, and will be overprinted in bold, black type “lid Postage.” These stamps will not be placed on simultaneous sale everywhere, but will be available from all post offices as present stocks of the current issue became exhausted. Consequently there will be no fixed date for the first day of issue. When fresh stocks of the current lid stamp arrive from England supplies remaining of the provisional issue will be withdrawn.-
