PONY CLUB GETS READY FOR BIG DAY TOMORROW
Quite early this morning Pony Club officials and helpers were on the job at the showgrounds preparing for tomorrow’s gymkhana, and by tonight all will be ready.
First of the horses will arrive from the outlying branches this afternoon, and will be picketed in the yards at the showground for the night. It was reported to an executive meeting on Tuesday evening that a truckload of horses and a team of riders will be coming through from Tauranga to Compete, and the executive decided to allocate a trophy at the next annual gymkhana for competition between this and the Tauranga districts, the donor being the secretary, Mrs R. M. Cobbe.
The executive gratefully accepted an offer by the Legion of Frontiersmen to provide gatekeepers and traffic patrols at the ground, but was still short of three men for gate reliefs and decided to seek the assistance of kindred bodies, as the Club’s own officials will be fully occupied on the ground. The St John Ambulance Brigade’s offer of a first aid team was also accepted with expressions of appreciation. One of the special features of tomorrow’s show will be the demonstration by Miss Heather Swarbrick, who holds all her Pony Club certificates as well as being a noted A. and P. show ring rider. Her father, Mr L. P. Swarbrick, vice-, president of the New Zealand Pony Club Association, will also be present, and will conduct the quiz session for the non-riders’ general knowledge trophy. The programme has been planned to catch unflagging public interest, and should provide grand sport for the spectators as well as the competitors. The Hon W. Sullivan will take the salute at the parade of ponies immediately after lunch, and will present trophies decided up to that time. /
