CANVAS “CITY” SPRINGS UP FOR ADVENTISTS
The annual camp meeting and contention of the north New Zealand "Conference of Seventh-day Adventists was formally opened on Friday by Pastor R. J. Burns, President of the conference. The convention, which is being held on the premises and grounds of the New Zealand Missionary College, the denomination’s theological college •at Longburn, from Janary 5 to 15, is the biggest Adventist convention ever to be held in New Zealand. Two hundred and twenty-five tents are pitched, converting the farming area of the college into a veritable canvas city. Organisers hope the huge three pole marquee with a floor space of 10,000 square feet, seating 12,000 people, will be crowded to capacity for the Sabbath services. There will be five other marquees for subsidiary meetings. Over 800 delegates are accommodated in the tents and college buildings. Four weeks of preparatory activity has enabled the camp to be fitted with facilities designed to ensure the comfort of the inhabitants. Electric light is provided for every tent, hot and cold water, shower rooms, cafeteria service, post office, etc. to make it a self-contained mushroom city. Camp fees and offerings meet the £5,000 running expenses of the camp.
