Long-Range Housing Plan In America
A decent home in a healthy environment for every American family is the goal of a multi-billion dollar long-range housing programme now under way in the United States. With approval by Congress of the Housing Act of 1949, Government and industry have initiated a nationwide attack on inadequate or substandard housing. Plans call for a 1,500,000,000 dollar slum clearance drive, a low-rent housing construction programme during the next six years; a farm housing programme; and a study of ways to improve building materials, reduce construction costs, and increase production of homes.
This over-all housing effort, says President Truman, will “permit us to take a long step toward increasing the well-being arid happiness of millions of our fellow citizens.”
