Electrical Installations Six new lighting and heating installations, •which included a number of alterations and additions, were made at Whakatane during . the past month. The same number/of ranges and hot water were installed. Only one motor was handled.
Sheep To Be Grazed Sheep are to be grazed on the rugby grounds at Whakatane Field during the summer, it was decided at this week’s meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council. W.c.x.is to be put in hand immediately for making the fences and gates sheep proof.
Four Applicants Fail Of the 25 applicants tested for drivers’ licenses at Whakatane during the past two months only four failed to pass the tests according to the traffic inspector, Mr M. C. Bridge. Several warnings were issued for various traffic offences and there were two prosecutions.
Hillerest Water Supply Because the present pumping plant will not be able to handle any further water it has now become necessary to obtain quotations for new pumping equipment, to tinue the water supply to Hillcrest, according to the electrical engineer, Mr F. Lysaght, at the monthly meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council. The estimated cost is about £2000.'
Teaching Safe Driving Safe operation of motor vehicles is being taught in a growing number of secondary schools in the United States. The Association of Casualty and Surety Companies, a private trade group, reports that 6,191 schools in 43 States offered such courses last year »to 814,000 students. This represented an increase of about 45 per cent over the previous year in both the number of classes and number of students
New Railway Seats
Newly designed three-position seats are to be installed in two second-class carriages on the Christ-church-Invercargill express as the first step in a comprehensive scheme to increase the comfort of rail travel. The new seats are equipped with comfortable head, arm, and foot rests, in addition to an automatic adjuster for the back. It has not been decided when the seats will come into use on other railway services.
Building Permits Fifteen building permits to a total value of £10,284 were fssued during the past month the building inspector, Mr F. W. Lysaght, . reported to the monthly meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council, of these three were for dwellings, three for additions to residences and the same number for shed removals. There was one application each for detached wash-house, hall, additions to shop and garage, fowihouse and a garage.'
Whakatane The Best
Congratulations of the excellent case for Whakatane prepared and presented by the borough council sub-committee to the Licensing Commission at Rotorua last week, L: were extended by the Mayor, B. S. Barry, at the monthly meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council. He said that the Commission had considered that Whakatane had presented a very good case and ; one member of the Commission said it was one of the best yet presented by a local body.
Ohope Socials Final of a series of six such gatherings, the social and dance to be held at the Captain’s Cabin, Ohope, on October 20 will mark the close of a remarkable co-operative effort in which all the organisations on the beach have pulled together for the common good and for the promotion of a community spirit. For all the gatherings the orchestra (Harrison’s) has played gratis, the Ohope Transport Company has provided free buses and Mr T. Danks has placed the Captain’s Cabin at the organisers’ disposal free of charge. Proceeds have been shared by the participating organisations to further their work -at Ohope.
