Discrimination Urged In The Selection Of Immigrants
The hope that the Government would not be indiscriminate in the selection of immigrants to New Zealand, through over-anxiety, was expressed by Mr A. C. Youngman (Oropi) at the quarterly executive meeting of the Bay of Plenty Province of Federated Farmers at Matata. Mr Youngman said that while he was anxious as anyone to see immigrants coming to New Zealand, an effort should be made to see that they were steady and reliable types, preferably of British or Scandinavian stock.
The chairman, Mr S. A. Weils (Katikati), remarked that it was a very important question. He thought that immigration was the answer to the labour problem and the population question. He would like, he added, to see a very vigorous immigration policy* adopted, and suggested that the subject should be raised at the Dominion centerence of Federated Farmers.
