Disgusted at being considered a genius by every “nitwit” when he at all times attempted to make himself appear perfectly normal, Rachmaninoff came ; up with the retort courteous when a stage-struck listener gurgled, “Whatever inspired you to compose such a wonderfully marvellous piece as your C-Sharp Minor Prelude?”
The master made a deep bow and, with a perfectly composed face, replied, “Because, Madam, I needed the dough.”
