Goldfield Days Recalled
Believed to be one of the last, if not the last, surviving members of the large parties of Chinese who were brought to Kumara to work as indentured labourers during the height of the gold rush, Jimmy Quong, died in the Grey Hospital. Quong became a well known figure around the West Coast, as with the decline in old mining he worked on various farms in the Grey Valley, and also in Chinese gardens in Marsden Road, Greymouth. He had lived at Bodytown for the past 10 years. Born in Hong Kong, he arrived at Hokitika 71 years ago. He was aged 85 years.
