BAY OF PLENTY DEFEATS POVERTY BAY RIGDEN SHIELD RETAINED The anticipated Poverty Bay v Bay of Plenty Cricket match for the Rig'den Shield took place on the Whakatane Domain on Easter Saturday and Sunday, the home team retaining the trophy. The game was an example of good representative play, and the winning team could be adjudged as definitely superior.

When the 'Rigden Shield was presented last season by the well-known player whose name it bears, it was intended that two matches should se played each season between Poverty Bay and Bay of Plenty. This arrangement was carried out last season, one game being played in Tiakatane and the other in Gisborne, but owing to a heavy proramme during the season just con;luded, it was not possible for Bay f Plenty to visit Gisborne on Anni/ersary Day. The Easter match at Whakatane, therefore, represented the first contest for the trophy between the respective sides this season.

The visitors, used to turf wickets, found difficulty in dealing with many balls that were under-pitched by reason of the pace at which they came off the matting-on-concrete. Good length bowling was at times also awkward for the same reason.

Bay of Plenty Opens Bay of Plenty’s opening innings was not impressive on the whole. Spring played a sound opening knock for 52 and McKenzie who went in first wicket down batted patiently for 20. It was pleasing to -,ee Barrow of Rotorua pick up a veil-made 22 in his first representative innings while his partner Hobbs also of Rotorua, showed patience in gathering 5 singles. The bowling tonours went to Taylor whose fast mediums took 4 for 45, and to Fraser, the visiting captain who took 3 for 25 with leg-breaks. Poverty Bay’s Innings

Poverty Bay fared badly in losing the first 2 wickets for 12 runs, but a good stand was made by Torrie, who showed a liking for anything on the leg side and hit up a quick 32. There was no other double figure score unT the two tail-end batsmen, Brittenden and Fields hit up 15 apiece, he innings closing for 91. No doubt the accurate bowling of Tisher and McKenzie kept the batsnen on the defensive. Fisher took 3 wickets for 34 off 20 overs and frequently turned the ball disconcert'gly into the batsmen’s legs. Home Side’s Victory Opening Bay of Plenty’s second innings Spring was caught off his glove for 10, but his partner Crawford went merrily on to score 54, including six fours and a six. McKenzie gave a chance in slips before he settled down to solid batting when he scored 54 not out. Badeley’s luck was not with him and he was again dismissed cheaply but Fisher, 8 not out, helped the score to 146 when the innings was declared closed, leaving Poverty Bay the heavy task of scoring 204 to win in 2\ -~>urs.

The visitors’ final innings opened disastrously as Sheffield was caught close in, in the first over. The bowling of Fisher and McKenzie again kept the batsmen pegged down until 5 wickets were down for 22. Torrie and Stewart reached double figures but the leg-spinners of Le Pine proved effective in breaking the partnership. Blair who went in number fight played an effortless knock for 33 not out, including 5 fours, while Fraser batted solidly for 11 in a failing light. With the last batsman > and but a few minutes of play left the umpires decided that the light was not good enough for further play. The innings closed at 98 for 9 wickets, the Rigden Shield remaining in the Bay of Plenty. Following were the scores:— ■„ Bay of Plenty Ist Innings
