Removal of Sales Tax
A request to the Minister of Finance to give immediate consideration to the removal of the Sales Tax on building materials—a course which has been adopted in was made by Mr W. Sullivan (Nap tional Bay of Plenty) in notice of a question in the House of Representatives. Mr Sullivan said that last session the. Minister said there were technical difficulties in the way of such a step, but in Australia, as from September 8 last, all building materials had been exempt from the Commonwealth sales tax which had been in force since November, 1940. The removal of the sales tax required alteration of prices to conform and a Prices Regulation Order was 'issued last November requiring the retail selling prices of the. mar terials affected to be reduced by the amount of the sales tax and any profit on the sales tax.
