£105 AVERAGE AT OAKLEA n CONSIDERABLE AUSTRALIAN f COMPETITION The high range of prices established hist year at Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co. Ltd.'s annual series of Stud Jersey Sales, was more than maintained at the recent fortnight of sales held by the firm. This year 5 26 lots sold at prices from 200gns to 500gns, a record for all time. A , part}' of Victorian and South Australian breeders were in evidence - and many orders on behalf of Aus- . tralian breeders were also filled by the firm, these being on behalf of New South Wales and South Australian stud masters. New Zealand breeders were, however, in great force and offered the strongest competition. Fine weather prevailed and the sales were carried "out under the best possible conditions. At the opening fixture the dispersal of Mr W. T. Luxton's Ridgway Stud at Matangi, 158 head, all ages, were disposed of in a space of just over four hours, 12 lots making three figure prices. Mr Charles Stevens, of Maungatapere, paid the top price of 37ogns for the 3 year old bull i Cowslip's Golden Aim, by the imported sire, Golden Franchise. Aim. This bull Avas Reserve Grand Champion at the National Show and Sale in 1942 when sold by his. breeder Mr Truby King, for 230girs. Beechlands . Nice Flag, V.H.C., by Mr Luxton's imported bull Bravo Nice Lad, was top priced female, at 250gns to Mr W. J. Chynoweth, of Walton, and her son went to Victoria at 140gns. Mr W. Mcars, of Walton, also paid 210gns for Ridgway Nice Frond, another four year old daughter of Bravo Nice Lad. The herd realised approximately 7000 gns. Mr Alan Smith, of Hamilton, had the honour of securing the top average, as at his annual sale 43 yearling and 2 year old heifers and bulls made the great average of approximately lOOgns. Bidding was exceptionally keen, and 16 lots realised three figure prices. Mr W. H. Booth paid the top price of 275gns for the bull Oaklea Designer's Sundown, a classy son of Bcaulieu Sundown, C.8.8. Other sons of this, sire sold included Oaklea King Cid at 240gns to Mr T. McEldowney, New Plymouth; Oaklea Premium Lad at 230gns to Mr C. Bones, Kaipaki and Oaklea Golden Major at 210gns to Mr 11. Bowe.n, Bulls. A son of Oaklea Goldie, V.H.C., C.O.R. 7261b fat, and the imported sire Prideful Masterpiece. went to Mr T. Muggeridge, Hawera, at 220gns. Top price amongst the females was. the 2 year old heifer Oaklea Noble Maid, a daughter of Woodlands Gold Shot, secured at 200gns by Mr E. J. Corlett, Ing'.ewood. An outstanding yearling heil'cr b}' Prideful Masterpiece (imp) was also secured by Mr J. Maloncy, Victoria, at 210gns. Another large, crowd was- present at M,r W. H. Carter's dispersal sale where the top females of the Meridale offering went to Australia, a Victorian breeder paying 300gns for the 11 year old show caw Meridale Novel it c.,, V.H.C., while the show heifer Meridale Design's Elect went to the same destination at 350gn.s. Seventy-six head sold realised 350% gns, an average of 47%gns. Many extraordinary prices marked the dispersal sale of Messrs Boon and Berg's Cloverfields Stud at Whakatane, thirteen lots making 200gns or over, a record for the Dominion. ■Many lots went to "Australia. The imported sire, Franchise White Aim, 5 years, bought a year ago at the great O.K. dispersal sale for 460gns fell to the bid of Mr W. T. Luxton, Matangi, at oOOg'ns, top price, while two of his rising 2 year old heifers O.K. Franchise Lassie and O.K. Franchise Alma made 325gns and 220gns each, being bought, by Wright Stephenson and Co. Ltd. for Australian clients. The aged herd sire, Oddicombe Dreaming Sam, 9 years, C.8.8. was bought by Mr Frank Gcck, To Kauwhata at 200gns, while 125gns was paid by Mr W. T. Lux-' ton for Cloverfields Enid, V.H.C., a 6 year old grand-daughter of Brampton Dreaming Sam. Mr A. E. VVatkin, late of O. lv., paid 300grs for her 3 year old daughter Cloverfields Ena, one of Lhe top daughters of Oddicombe Dreaming Sam. Mr Watkin also paid 410gns for Cloverfields Peach, an intensely bred Dreaming Sam 3 year old heifer in calf to Franchise White Aim. One. hundred and twenty-eight head, all ages, made the great average of 85 gns, a remarkable result, and a Dominion record for a sale of this size. To]) price at the dispersal sale of Mr Gordon Hewitt's Brooklands Stud at Waimana was 200gns for an 8 year old cow, Brooklands Monica, by Idalia's Sunrise, a former National Grand Champion bull, and from the Dreaming Sam cow Meon Monehu, was paid by Mr W. T. Luxton. Six females at this sale realised three figure prices including Brooklands Princess H.C., C.O.R. 8021b fat. bought by the auctioneers as agents for a client at ltiogns. A total of (52 head realised 2312gns at an average of 38gns. Two other sales in the Bay of Plenty were the dispersal of the

Mama'kura Stud on account of Mr Keith I'Anson, Tauranga, where 50 head sold made an average of 25gns. The final offering of the series was the Merriland Displenishing Sale at Waimana on account of Mr R. L. McDonald. This was another good realisation, 84 head bringing a total of 1497%gn5.
