WHAKATANE ACTIVITIES JUNE MEETING The monthly meeting of the Red Cross Society was. held in the Borough Council Chambers on Tuesday, June 13 at 2 p.m. Mrs W. Sullivan was in the chair* • Mrs Sullivan outlined the plans made for raising funds for the. Polish Red Cross, during United Nations Relief Week. Many generous donations to the shop, and lor raflles had been received. A street collection would be held on Friday 16th, and a copper trail on the following Saturday morning. The Entertainments Committee hoped to arrange a dance for the Saturday night 17th. V.A.D: Mrs Prideaux said she was holding classes in hei own home every week, and regular monthly meetings were being held. Mrs Timbs, convener of the Knitting Circle, said the following articles had been made and despatched during the month: For the Joint Council 5 sleeveless pullovers, 7 pairs socks; for Patriotic 2 scarves, 1 pair mittens, 3 pairs socks, 5 balaclavas. Hospital Visiting: Mrs James said the number of men in the hospital fluctuated there had been only one or two in recently. Mrs James showed walking sticks she had bought on behalf of the committee in Auckland. It was decided that they should be given into Mrs James' charge to be lent or given to patients as occasion demanded. N.Z. Red Cross Magazines: Mrs Caisley said she was disposing of these fairly well but still more subscribers were, wanted. At 2d per copy, or 2/- per annum the- cost was: not excessive, and it was to be hoped more of the public would buy them. Mrs E. Armstrong, for the. Entertainments Committee, said that there had been no farewells during the month but a parcel had been sent to Brian James. Lady Galway Guild: Mrs Moran reported that she had packed and despatched four cases of goods last month, containing 670 articles, among them some toys. She. had also collected a number of things for the .Ravensthorpe Convalescent Home, and her committee had wound some clean linen into bandages for the hospital. Mrs. Sullivan said Mrs Moran should be warmly congratulated for the. excellent and sustained work she had done for the Guild, and appreciation of her work was shown by hearty clapping. Shop: Mrs A. G. Allan reported that shop takings were £64 10s 2%d. fo-fc the month. This was less than the previous month, but June was a bad month for fruit, flowers and vegetables, and butter rationing made things harder. Also the shop, unavoidably, was closed for three days. Mrs Allan also reported that four American boys had been billeted during the month and one had been visited in hospital. Mrs James said a gramophone had been given to the shop, but it was broken, and they had had it. on their hands for some time. Mr C. Armstrong had very kindly repaired -it free of cost and the machine had been sold in the Mart for £1 1.7s 6d. This concluded the meeting. I
