CEREMONY AT NUKUHOU

INTERVAL AT IDANCE

To fianise the. day's events at Nukuhou recently when the new school was declared officially opened a most popular danee was held in the evening in the school, which was filled to its capacity. The music for dancing was played by Mr and Mrs. M. King, and Mr A. Bell kindly. obliged with extras. The duties of M.C. was most capably carried out by Mr Steere. Mr XV. Sullivan. M.P., and Mrs Sullivan of Whakatane were present. and were welcomed and introduced by the chairman of the School Committee. Mr Jerram. Mr Sullivan was. then asked to perform the opening of the new portion of the scho&l. Mr J. L. Burnett also spoke'and stated that when the school was in need of pupils in the earlier da3 7 s, tliipee families arrived in the district,, one with seven children, one eleven and, one thirteen, so all vacancies Avere lilled. The attendance had steadily risen since then and Mr Burnett thought the. only mistake the committee had made was that they had not applied for a larger extension to the school, as the building was more than full of dancers. Mr Burnett congratulated the builders on the splendid workmanship in the building, the plan for'which had, been very well laid out the folding doors dividing the two spacious class rooms being a great asset..

Mr Sullivan then addressed the gathering and, thanked the. chairman for the kind invitation extended to Mrs Sullivan and himself to be present at the function, and it gave them great pleasure to be 1 able to he in attendance. The speaker congratulated the chairman on the splendid evening, stating he was

sure all present were having a most enjoj'able time. He expressed pleaspre that he had been, able to assist in getting the school enlarged and said he Mould do his best to assist, all the people in the Bay in every way possible. He invited them all to bring their troubles and requirements to liim, whether, they were with him or not.

Mr Sullivan added that he hoped they would the school tp be enlarged to oouble the present size in the next live years. He then declared the school open and was given rousing applause.

Supper was then served by the ladies of the committee and a willing band ,of helpers. Great credit was due to the. teachers who worked hard to help to make the function such a success. The Avinners of the Monte Carlo waltzes were Mr G. Gil landers" and' partner, and Mr H. Croft, and Miss M. McLean. Dancing concluded at 1 a.m. and the singing of "Aukl Lang Syne" closed the evening.
