The defection of Beaupartir has left Catalogue in pride of place with 9.3, and lie is particularly lit after his Australian campaign. As the winner of the -Melbourne Cup last year, he has proved his ability to run lavo miles in firstclass company, and although he finished out of a place in that race this year, lie will stand a better chance against the weaker class in the Auck land Cup. There is some doubt about Golden Sheila getting to the post. If she starts, and suffers no ill-el-fect from the rick she sustained in the running of rive Te Awamutu Cup last Saturday, she is expected to be well Lo the fort; at the finish. Had she been lit she. avouUl have held this field. FWkvl Tide has been undergoing a preparation for this race for some lime and is expected to prove dangerous. King Key has reached the veteran stage but ran third at Te Awamulu. Sly Fox would appreciate nn easing of the ground. Llangollen, with the handy impost of 8.1, should be very prominent. She has yet to be tested at two miles but won the Herrics Mem orial, 1 mile and 3 furlongs at Te Arolia last Febrtwy. She is a game mare, used to carrying welter weights in sprint events, and should see the distance right out. Iloyev j rus. Balinavar, Dictate a'ul The Cardinal have to IK? reckoned with. In the event of Golden Shield not starting the probable favourites will be: Llangollen, Catalpgue, Flood Tide. Suleiman 9.G, Orate 9.5, Paper Slipper 9.2, Amigo 8.13, Far]and 8.13, Disdain 8.5, Our Jean 8.0, Bronwen 7.13, Orelio 7.7, Olympus 7.4, Arvakur 7.3, Blonde Princess 7.1, Foxmond, Gamos, Konneta, Miss Te Ivoura, Palustre 7.0. Last year's winner, Disdain, is reported to be lit and may repeat her performance. Suleiman failed at Te Awamutu but is a class sprinter and may be hard to beat.. Orate is rather uncertain at the barrier while Paper Slipper and Amigo have not raced recently. However the Beau Pere gel J ing is brilliant at his best and may be on form on the day. Farland has won at EUerslie, while Our Jean, winner of the sprint at the Waipa meeting last Saturday has speed above the average. Bronwen and Orelio are capable of traversing the distance in good time. Olympus appears to be out of his class as do Gamos, Konneta, Miss Te Ivoura and Palustre. The latter would be dangerous if she repeated her best. Arvakur won at Ellerslie recently and Blonde Princess may show up in the running. Foxmond is a brilliant three-year-old responsible for some excellent performances. Possessing a nice turn of speed, this filly should be prominent. Luck in the running will influence Ihe result but the pub lie may place most reliance on Orelio, Our Jean, Suleiman. This race will be difficult for investors as the field includes some good performers. Homily, Paddy the Rip, Moorsotis, Baran, Katlibella, Pirate King, Silver Quex, Sunola arc possibilities. Silver Quex, Moorsotis and Pirate King may be in demand. STARTING TIMES Starting times for the first day of the Auckland Racing Club's Summer Meeting are as follows:—■ 11.45: Queen's Plate. 12.30: Grafton Hurdles. 1.20: Great Northern Foal Stakes 2.15: Auckland Cup. 3.5: Robinson Handicap. 3.55: Railway Handicap. 4.40: Nursery Handicap. 5.30 Christmas Handicap. NOTES AND COMMENTS The Waipa Racing Club was favoured on Saturday with a large attendance of the public, all parts of the wide district being welli represented. The racing track was a little on the dead side, so the times recorded were somewhat slower than is usual at this time of the year. The programme opened with the Park Hurdles, and the winner Hopalong, scored in good style from Dev on, who clouted the last hurdle and lost his position, and Chikara. He was ridden very capably by A. Gilmer, and his victory was fully due. In the Kihikihi Hack the favourite division comprised Cornish, Tellsom and Clipper. In a well fought out finish, in which the placed horses flashed past the post practically together, Clipper gained the verdict by a short head from Town Section, whose victory at Cambridge on Labour Day was followed by his backers collecting a dividend of over half a I century. | The Waipa Plate was run in two divisions, and speculation was decidedly brisk notwithstanding the general opinion was that the issues were very open. The finish in the first division was quite an exciting one, victory going by a head to the Ellerslie trained Biddy Girl, by Oration—Biddy Comet from Merry Vaals which is duly improving. Glen Connell, ridden by T. Green, was backed down to a short price in the second division, others solidly supported bein.<| Mercurv Bay, Flying Vixen and Lady Waimai. Most of the running was made by the favourite, but Trig Station by Surveyor with a splendidly sustained run, gain ed the verdict by over a length, his supporters receiving quite a remunerative price. Glen Connell showed great speed for six furlongs and should not be much longer in getting on to the winning list. The Te Awamutu Cup brought, out a field of 14, the most fancied division including Balinavar, Baran, Cheval de Voice and Flood Tide. Prior to the start Balinavar went through the barrier tapes, and unseated C. G. Goulsboro. He was soon caught, however, and led back to the post by his trainer, C. J. Lewis. The early running was carried out by Orate, Vaalso and Gladynev from King Key, Cheval de Voice, Baran,. Bon Star, Flood Tide and Balinavar, the rear division comprising Golden Sheila, The Cardinal, Scotland and Poland. Orate led into the straight with Vaalso and King Key being handy and Gladynev almost on terms In a fast finish Gladynev dashed to the front and scored by a length from Balinavar and King Rev. The two latter performed best of the Auckland Cup horses that competed, and the efforts of Golden Sheila. 1 lie Cardinal, Sly Fox, Flood Tide, i'lieval de Voice, Poland, Bon Star and Scotland were by no means convincing. The Hack Cup went to the Takanini trained Proud Fox, with Race Camp and Serenata in the places. Young George Smith was seen to advantage in a well ridden finish. The highly bred Ora King accounted for the first division of the Ohaupo Hack, with May Song and Town Section sccond and third respectively, while the second .division went to the Bronze Eagle—Archens mare Pascens, ridden by Mudford. Our Jean, piloted by O. Evans, scored a meritorious win from Brazen Bold and Gamos in the Flying Handicap, and will now be still more in favour for the A.R.C. Railway Handicap.
