The Bay of Plenty dßeacon Published Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 7th, 1939. WHAKATANE'S SHOW

WHOLEHEARTED support for the Winter Show, which opens this evening, is the definite duty of all citizens of Whakatane. Here is an exhibition which is indicjatve not merely of the pro gress of our town and district, but of the industry and qualifications of the people; who go to make up our community. The 'SHOW'' is the general topic at the present, but there are so many well-meaning people who though they have every intention of affording it support, yet lack the interest that enables them to make the effort to visit the exhibition and show that they are in every sense of the word true citizens, who appreciate public endeavour. The hard working committee, has arranged for a crowded programme which embraces three days. Each feature is in itself an item demanding careful planning and detailed staging. Those responsible are this year endeavouring Uo make the Winter Show memorable for the number of outstanding and' novel attractions which will be featured for the benefit of visitors. Entries in all sections are reported by the secretary to be excellent, combining to make splendid displays of Horticultural, Arts and Crafts and the Home Industries departments. From the entertainment point of view the Show would be hard to beat. Apart from an increased number of sideshows, there remains the unique Scottish feature on Thursday, in which the Whakatane Caledonian Society will combine in giving a colourful programme of Highland dances and items. The competitions commence at 10 a.m. to-morrow, and will be continued throughout the day. On Saturday the long awaited Children's events will take place. As usual this will commence: with a proaession of decorated vehicles, children s prams, tricycles and trolleys. The Municipal Band will head the parade which will march from B.S.L. Commerce Street at 1.30 p.m. Specials prizes have been awarded for the best fancy costumes, and vehicles, which will be judged on arrival at the Show Grounds. Children's Day this year ishould' be an unqualified success. Citizens of Whakatane should realise that the Winter Show fe their show, that its success or failure depends entirely on their goodwill or apathy, and finally that in the eyes of all visitors it represents the finest advertisement the town is capable of giving.
