PAROA'S FINE FORM

Rugby enthusiasts last Saturday - -were treated once more to an exciting fare, when the club fixtures un•rtler the Union's competitions were • continued on the Domain. The weather was fine and the ground in good order,, enabling Rugby to attain a : gratifying standard which denotes steady improvement in style and-sci-•ence. The outstanding game was that between Paroa and Poroporo. From the outset play was keen and it was obvious both teams were full out and : -giving of their best. Paroa developed ; an aggressive style that gave them -.ascendency in the early stages, and gradually wore down the blue jerseys • defence. In the concluding stages JPoroporo, were showing visible signs •of wear. City won in good fashion from a hardy Waimana fifteen, who, -chased the scores to within a point of each other.. The junior fields also 'revealed good football, while a friend "ly match between the visiting boy Scout troop from Maketu and Wha"katane resulted in an overwhelming •victory for the locals, V THE SCORE BOARD Seniors Paroa defeated Poroporo 16-6. .defeated/Waimana 15-14 Juniors. • Star defeated Taneatua 22.8. The black Jerseys worried through to quarter way, where Dodd took a couple of long shots at goal missing narrowly each time. CITY WINS WHAKAT AN E 1.% WAIMANA 14 Only a handful of people watched Whakatane beat Waimana on No. 2 ground on Saturday. The game was an exciting one, and the narrow margin of points separating the teams kept the tension on throughout. Best men for Whakatane were Oswald at second live-eighths, and Wilson, Best and Mahy in the forwards. Mahy came on to fill the depleted rauks y and played a good bustling game. Boynton and McKay Angus were per. haps Waimana's best. Waimana, were the first to scorc when McLea.n ran through a tackle on the line. 'lUie kick hit the post. Whakatane were attacking when Oswald made a speculator soccer kick which dropped over the players and over the Waimana line. Butler had followed up smartly and was there to fall on it. Oswald converted, mak ing the score 5-3. Whakatane was making the pace when Oswald goaled a penalty. W ai_ mana missed a score in the left corner, then Steve Takau crossed. The long kick feil under the bar, and the scores were £-6. A little later Boynton broke through on his own and scored. The ball hit the post, fell on to the bar, wobbled and fell on the right side. Waimana 11, Whakatane 8. There was no further score to halftime, and after the resumption Whakatane seemed rattled. However, fortunes changed slowly and Jackson took a long pass from the line out, ran through, handed on to Mahy who kicked to Boynton. The fullback was 1 bustled and Jackson passed to Oswald who fumbled the ball recovered it and passed back to Goodall, and the Whakatane fullback snapped a great pot. Whakatane's nose was in front and later on Oswald picked up a dropped pass and ran through, fending Steve Takau off with a palm to the gullet and scoring to make the tally 15 to 11. In the closing stages Waimana kicked a penalty and the game ended Whakatane 15, Waimana 14. The Rev K.J. Watson was referee j THE JUNIORS POROPORO DEFEAT OLD BOYS The teams were:— Old Boys (white), Finn, Buddie, Boon, Roulston, Coutts Fife, McKenzie, Drummond, Thompson Fisher, Parsons, Carmichael and Carey. Poroporo (blue): Hoi, Ngoungou, Kororiko, Tunui, Ratahi, Hotene, Kelly, N. I-jer, T. Riini, Paul Watarawi, J. Riini, Mason, Kniglit. Play opened carefully J. Knight notching Poroporo's first points after a clever run through. Kelly failed to convert. Shortly after Ijer kicked a penalty goal ? giving the blue jerseys a six point lead. Old Boys now started to infuse better spirit into their play and after some keen forward work, Coutts slipped through and scored, Thompson failing to convert. Poroporo Old Boys 3. Ijer who was playing at his best now scored a try which went unconverted. For the white jerseys Carey also notched a score. Just before half time Kororiko slipped across making the score Poroporo 12, Old Boys 6. The blues were now putting their best step foremost and as a result Old Boys were severely handled for some minutes. Kororiko scored again making the points 15-6. Partridge was referee. RUNAWAY IN SECOND HALF STAR. 22, TANEATUA 8 J Star proved a. ireat second halt team at Taneatua on Saturday when they beat Taneatua by 22 to 8. Taneatua shaded Star in the first half and the score was 8 points to nil in their favour at orange time. Then Star turned round and proceeded to devastate Taneatua with slashing forward rushes which disorganised the opposing backs, and were well supported by the Star back line.
