MAGISTRATE'S WARNING TO BOOKMAKERS
(P.A.) Masterton, Nov. 17. "In future, bookmakers appearing for the first time will be fined heavily, and if they appear again thev will be imprisoned," said Mr J. R. Herd, S.M., at Masterton today. "I want it to be clearly understood the law will be enforced. Too many bookmakers appear to adopt the attitude that a fine is part of their expenses, and so the law is disregarded and held in disrespect." Mary Dawn Simunovic, for aiding and abetting a bookmaker by allowing her house and phone to be used for bookmaking, was fined £lO. "I want it to be understood that a person who assists a bookmaker by making available their house or phone is liable to the same penalty as' a bookmaker," said DetectiveSergeant F. A. Gordon. The case was brought as a warning, and although a heavy penalty was not sought, those who might be tempted to lend their phones in future could not expect leniency, he said.
