Four-door sedan:; have replaced two-door sedans as the most pc pular body style for passenger autos in the United States, reports the Automobile Manufacturers Association. Bituminous coal makes up twothirds of all fuel used in manufacturing processes of primary industries in the United States, reports the National Coal Association. The Boy Scouts of America have contributed about 400,000 dollars in cash and material to their World Friendship Fund, set up to aid other scout organisations of the world. * * * * In 1948, the 23,000,000 milk cows in the United States produced an average of 5,036 pounds of milk and 200 pounds of butter-fat each. Both figures set new records. More than 766,000 persons in the United States own stock in the American Telephone and Telegraph Company. In 1920, the corporation had 140,000 stock-holders. * * * * Since its founding, the U.S. Department of the Interior has acquired and developed 28 national parks, occupying 11,347,269 acres. The parks are preserved for conservation and recreation purposes. In the fiscal year 1948, the Farmers Home Administration extended low-interest loans to 322.000 farm families in the United States. Loans were made to buy or operate farms, to purchase livestock or equipment, or to improve buildings. ..; * * * The amount of purchased scrap used in United States steel-making furnaces in 1948 was greater than ever before, the American Iron and Steel Institute reports. The total exceeded 20,500,000 gross tons. This was nearly 2.000,000 tons larger than in 1947 and more than 3,000,000 tons over the wartime peak of 1942. * * * * The number of women and children travelling on American airwavs is increasing. About 35 per cent, of all air-line passengers in the United States are women. During 1948 one United States airline alone flew more than 150,000 children between the ages of two and 12 as well as thousands of babies.
