SPINSTER OR FEMME SOLE?
Spinster or femme sole? The New Zealand Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs is attempting to have the term “spinster” changed legally and officially to femme sole. For ■ years “spinster” has been a description of all unmarried women that has irritated most of those who were in that category. The Oxford dictionary describes spinster as “an unmarried (especially elderly in popular use) woman!” It says it is a Middle English (1200-1500) word meaning “woman who spins.”
