Discussion On Appeal Boards

Harbour Officials Confer At New Plymouth

Tauranga Chairman Reports

One of the most important discussions at the recent harbour boards' conference at New Plymouth was a question of appeal boards, said the chairman of the Tauranga Harbour Board (Mr J. D. Alach) reporting to the monthly board meeting. "There was a defect in the amendment to the Harbours Act passed last session, and it was proposed by the Government to remedy this defect during the current session," said Mr Alach.

"A resolution was passed at the conference that a telegram should be sent to the Minister of Marine requesting that this matter be deferred and that in the meantime harbour boards would set up appeal organisations of their own, so that harbour board employees who had grievances could appeal and have their cases heard and dealt with. "The New Plymouth board," continued Mr Alach brought forward a proposal that board members should be appointed to act as assessors in conciliation council proceedings. "Members of the conference generally were against this as they considered that the-eXecutive.officers of those boards at present acting as assessors had a greater grasp of the ramification ' of the various awards that effect harbour boards and that no member could possibly devote the time to study the problems that are considered in conciliation council proceedings." Generally, said Mr Alach, he felt the conference was an important one.
