Broad Mandate For British Delegates To Financial Talks In Washington
SIR STAFFORD CRIPPS TO HAVE SHORT REST MEANWHILE
(Rec. 8.15 a.m.) London, August 19. The Chancellor of the Exchequer (Sir Stafford Cripps) arrived back from Switzerland today and drove to Chequers to see the Prime Minister before going on to his home in Gloucestershire for a few days rest.
A Parliamentary correspondent understands 'that the Cabinet, when it meets next week, will probably give Sir Stafford and Mr Bevin a fairly broad mandate for the financial talks in Washington next month.
The United States Secretary of the Treasury (Mr Snyder) will preside at the talks, and the Secretary of State (Mr Dean Acheson) will also take part.
Canada will be represented by the Finance Minister (Mr Abbott) and the Minister of External Affairs. The Ministers' talks are expected to start on September 6 and it is hoped that they will be over before the meetings of the International Bank and Monetary Fund., which start on September 13.
