ROAD RACE INCLUDED IN EMPIRE GAMES
N.Z. CYCLING COUNCIL'S DECISION
AUCKLAND COURSE A STIFF. TEST
(PA) Auckland, March 18. At'the meeting of the Auckland Amateur Cycling Centre last evening official confirmation of the suggested road race course for the British Empire Games was received from the Council of the- New Zealand Amateur Cycling Association. The course of 5£ miles*to the circuit will have to be covered twelve times by the competitors in the event of 100 kilometres. It starts near the overhead railway bridge at Parnell and rises steadily up Gladstone Road and St. Stephens Avenue to Brighton Road, which is followed down to Shore Road. On the latter road is a short, sharp hill which will provide a good test of hill climbing ability. Shore Road will be used to reach Orakei Road, and then the riders will follow a route along Orakei Road to Ngapipi Road and then along the latter to the waterfront road which will be followed to reach the starting point and complete the circuit. Both S. Patterson and K. Reynolds, the visiting Australians who were
here last month, completed two circuits of the course and were convinced that it would provide a thorough test for a road rider. It is hoped to hold one of the New Zealand trials over the course before the final selection of this Dominion's team. Encircling an expanse of water, Hobson Bav, the route does not interfere with the main traffic routes, while marshalling cross roads does not offer any serious problem.
