STREET TROUGHS AT MOUNT MAUNGANUI BOROUGH COUNCIL’S REPLY TO CLUB (Times Correspondent) Recently the Mount Maunganui Borough Council declined permission to the Kindness to Animals Club to erect two drinking troughs for dogs within the borough, on the grounds that the troughs selected were far too big and unsuitable for the purpose.. At this week’s meeting a letter was received from the president of the club asking that this decision be reconsidered and pointing out that smaller troughs were not readily procurable. The writer claimed that the supplier of the troughs had advised the council of the si’ze before sending them from the factory. In explanation, the town clerk, Mr G. E. Hutton said that the firm had phoned stating that troughs were being despatched and referred to the size of them. He had advised that the nuestion of size was one for the Kindness to Anima’s Club to discuss with the supplier. He had certainly not agreed to the suitability of the ones forwarded. The Mayor, Mr S. F. Newton stated that the council had given the club nermission to erect suitable troughs and that the onus was on the club officials to find out as to their suitability before ordering any. It was resolved to reply to the letter stating that the council could not authorise the setting up of the large troughs, which one councillor described as being more like swimming troughs than drinking vessels:
